Our Mission
The Tarlov Initiative is dedicated to raising awareness of Tarlov cyst disease and other spinal meningeal cyst disorders, improving medical education, amplifying patient voices, and advocating for greater recognition and research. We aim to bring attention to these conditions that are often misunderstood or overlooked and help close the gaps in knowledge that leave many patients searching for answers.
Through education, awareness campaigns, patient storytelling, and collaboration with healthcare professionals, researchers, and advocates, we strive to improve understanding of these conditions and their potential impact on daily life. We believe that patient experiences matter, that healthcare professionals deserve access to reliable information, and that more needs to be done to understand these conditions and how they affect those living with them.
Our goal is to turn awareness into meaningful change. By encouraging better medical education, supporting advocacy efforts, and promoting further research, we hope to reduce the delays, uncertainty, and dismissal that many patients experience. We are working toward a future where spinal meningeal cyst disorders receive the attention they deserve, patients are heard and taken seriously, and fewer people have to struggle for answers and understanding.
A future where spinal meningeal cyst disorders are understood, patients are heard, and no one has to endure prolonged suffering because their condition is overlooked or misunderstood.

Understanding Tarlov Cyst Disease
Spinal meningeal cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop in or around the membranes surrounding the spinal cord and nerve roots. They include a few types of cysts, such as Tarlov (perineural) cysts, meningeal diverticula, and other spinal meningeal cysts.
While some spinal meningeal cysts are not symptomatic, others may be associated with symptoms, pain, and significant limitations in daily life.
Despite their potential impact, these conditions can be challenging to understand and evaluate. Patients may face gaps in medical knowledge, uncertainty about whether a cyst is contributing to their symptoms, and difficulty finding healthcare professionals familiar with these conditions.
The Tarlov Initiative exists to help address these gaps by raising awareness, advancing medical education, amplifying patient voices, and advocating for greater recognition and research.
